Libo Sun from China began his journey in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) at Auburn University. Thanks to his hard work, commitment, and professional drive, as well as guidance from the Auburn Global team, Libo is already achieving his career goals: He graduated in 2022 with an MA in computer science and currently works for Wright Media as an AI engineer. He was also awarded a graduate research fellowship starting in Fall 2024 to pursue a PhD!

Read on to learn more about how Libo overcame the challenges of studying in a foreign country with dedication and positivity, achieving both academic and professional success.

International Student Life at Auburn University

“The first day I was at Auburn, I was so excited. I felt like everything was so new and all the teachers were so kind,” Libo said. “Auburn Global also [was] like a home to me.”

While Libo had access to a wide range of opportunities at Auburn University, adjusting to using English all the time was his biggest challenge. Most of the textbooks, classroom discussions, assignments, and presentations were all in English.

“I could not understand [at first]. Every time, when [the professor provided] audio to us to let us understand the article, I couldn’t understand. All the answers I had to guess,” Libo said.

With continuous support from his professors, as well as language resources at Auburn, over time Libo learned to adapt and practice the language. He took time to prepare before lessons and practice thoroughly before presentations after which he began understanding the coursework better.

“They were all so kind to us, although we could not understand [English] so much. They allowed us to play the audio multiple times,” he said. “That made the class much easier for me, and I really appreciate that.”

Studying Computer Science at Auburn University

At first, Libo was pursuing a master’s degree in public administration. But during his second semester, he transferred to computer science.

“I figured computer science might be a better option for me because I have a bachelor’s degree in the same area,” he said.

Libo has always been passionate about computer science, but was initially hesitant to pursue a master’s because of his age. Auburn put those concerns to rest.

“I felt I had changed a lot [from undergraduate school] … [at Auburn] I was feeling I am as young as any of the other students,” Libo said.

Initially, it was challenging for Libo to stay on track with the coursework, but with hard work and support from his professors and Auburn Global advisors, Libo scored well on his examinations and continued to pursue his academic and career interests in computer science.

Career Development for International Students at Auburn University

Libo credits his career progression in computer science to two aspects of his experience at Auburn University.

1. Building a strong network of students and professors

The computer science curriculum at Auburn involves many group projects, where students have the chance to network and build connections within the computer science department and other degree programs. Libo encourages students to explore and expand their connections, learn from team members, and put in their best effort in projects. This can leave lasting impressions on colleagues and professors.

“All the recommendations from your professors, teachers, and classmates will be very valuable. That is the most important thing for team projects. You must do as many as possible. Show your best to your classmates,” he said.

In fact, a fellow classmate landed Libo his first job as an AI software engineer

“He recommended me to his boss,” Libo said. “He said, ‘Libo is one of the best students I have ever seen at Auburn University and he is an excellent engineer.’ So the boss trusted that student, and I eventually got the job in that company after my graduation.”

Libo went on to build an AI-driven bidding system at the company, potentially reducing 85% of the company’s overall costs – a massive savings for the organization.

“That is the reason I was the best engineer inside of that company,” he shared.

2. Applying for jobs on campus

International students can understand the culture and work environment in the US better by working an on-campus job. Libo advises students to apply for any role at first. This can give students the chance to meet people, practice their communication skills, and identify any interpersonal skills that students may need to fine-tune for their careers.

“Find a job, any job on campus, and do not be shy,” he said.

Libo believes that one job can lead to others, which can help international students progress in their careers.

“I was working for Starbucks for a while, for almost one year,” he said. “Half a year later, I got an on-campus job at the Auburn library, a position [for] graduate research assistant (GRA). I worked there for half a year until I graduated from Auburn.”

Libo’s Advice for International Students

Despite initial challenges during his first semester at university, Libo emphasizes that it was a positive mindset, a belief he would succeed, and dedication to his studies that ensured he would thrive. He was even named Auburn Global Student of the Month during his second semester!

“If somebody else can do that, why shouldn’t I?” he said. “I did my best.”

He advises future international students that, to do well in the US, it is important to stay focused on long-term goals and manage one’s emotions. Remember, the international student journey can be full of highs and lows.

“Never doubt yourself,” he said. He reminds students to believe in themselves, prepare thoroughly, stay resilient, and seek out support from advisors when needed. “Remember [to never be stuck] in an emotional situation. Trust in yourself.”
