Are you an international student thinking about studying in the USA? Are you wondering if you’ll make new friends? How to meet people? Or how you can stay involved on campus? Jade M. has one tip for you: join a student club.

Jade, an Animal Sciences major from Panama, did not know anyone on campus or in her new home city of Baton Rouge. When she arrived at Louisiana State University (LSU), one of the first things she did was look up LSU's campus clubs.

“The main thing, whenever anybody asks me for advice for incoming freshmen, the first thing I always say is to join clubs,” says Jade. “That’s the most important thing to make friends and to get out of your comfort zone and meet new people,” she continues.

And there’s a bonus, she says: you will have the same interests.

“You’re also going to be joining clubs that you’re interested in, so you’re going to be meeting people that have the same interest as you,” she adds.

My first impression of LSU went beyond my expectations."

A good place to start, she says, is to join a club related to your major. You will meet like-minded people and get a head start on career networking.

“I joined the pre-veterinary club, but there’s also the petroleum engineering club or food science club,” she says.

“There’s so many different clubs for majors that you get to make friends, but you also get to make friends that are in your major that you’ll be with for the next four years or more of your life.”
