How to Use University Rankings
University rankings are a measure of quality that can help student applicants (and their families) during the university research process. Use university rankings as just one way to narrow down your choices about where to apply.
There are no official government rankings for “best” or “top” universities in the US. Different organizations, such as U.S. News & World Report, the Princeton Review, and Shanghai Rankings, among others, create their own criteria systems, evaluate schools based on that criteria, and then publish the results.
As just one example, U.S. News & World Report uses criteria focusing on reputation, research, and publication categories when it evaluates universities to be included in their annual global college rankings, Best Colleges list, and rankings by major.
Want to learn more about how to use college rankings in your college research process? Check out our Guide to US University Rankings & Accreditations or get in touch with our enrollment counselors. Our expert advisors can offer tailored advice, based on your goals and interests, on how to use university rankings based on what you want to study and your future career plans.
Remember, rankings are just one resource for you to use as you consider your study in the US plans – and they will not be able to cover all the different ways a college can offer an outstanding experience. In fact, many colleges not included in the top rankings still offer prestigious programs and amazing outcomes! As you start your US university journey, keep in mind that there are many places that will provide you with a great education, lifelong friends, and exciting opportunities. Start your research with the 2022 rankings – but remember not to end your search with them!
