Amid visa uncertainty, international students look for support
As we continue to await the final rule on Duration of Status (D/S), we are hearing increasing concerns from international students already in the US about the uncertainty these potential changes could create for their academic and professional futures. This article from the American Physical Society (APS) highlights many of the challenges and anxieties students are currently facing, while also sharing personal stories and firsthand experiences from international students around the world.
A major source of anxiety is not only the rule changes themselves but the uncertainty of when they will go into effect, several international students and scholars told APS News. "A firm ‘no' is better than keeping you hanging,” said one postdoctoral researcher from India, who requested anonymity. “If they just gave us a clear rule, we could do long-term planning.”
US Colleges Warn of International Student Crisis as Visa Delays Threaten Fall 2026 Enrollment
While this letter was originally issued on May 5, we wanted to ensure everyone had a copy. ACE, together with 32 higher education associations, sent a letter to the Department of State urging the prioritization of international student visa appointments during the peak summer season.
Earlier in April, the U.S. for Success Coalition submitted a similar request to the Department of State, advocating for the same action.
At this stage, it remains unclear whether there will be a meaningful increase in visa appointment availability. However, our team will continue monitoring the situation closely on a daily basis. In addition to requesting prioritization for student visa appointments, ACE also asked the Department of State to provide a formal briefing for the higher education community — another development we will be following closely.
While we ask that you prioritize student visa processing in the upcoming months, we would also appreciate a briefing for the higher education community regarding how the State Department is implementing the new screening policies and ensuring the continued timely processing of student visas. We welcome the opportunity to meet with your staff to discuss anticipated demand and ensure America’s colleges and universities remain the top destination for global talent. Thank you for your time and attention to this urgent matter.
Trump’s Recognition of International Students Signals Hope for America’s Mid-Tier Universities?
This article is definitely worth the read. Mr. Chaudhari, Associate Vice President and Senior International Officer at Webster University, shares thoughtful insights on the important role international students play at Webster, across Missouri, and throughout the United States. Throughout the piece, he highlights many important facts and reinforces the value international students bring far beyond tuition revenue. For anyone looking for strong talking points and advocacy messaging, this article offers several excellent examples.
Over the past eight years, Webster has experienced a remarkable financial and organizational transformation while strengthening its position as one of the most globally connected universities in the Midwest. A significant part of that progress has been driven by international students, global campuses, transnational partnerships, and sustained investment in global enrollment initiatives.
International students have helped Webster:
sustain and grow academic programs
strengthen graduate and STEM enrollment
support housing and auxiliary operations
enrich classroom learning through global perspectives
enhance the university’s financial resilience
expand Webster’s global identity and competitiveness
And Webster is not alone. Across Missouri and much of the Midwest, international students are playing an increasingly critical role in supporting institutions that are simultaneously navigating demographic decline, rising operational costs, and workforce shortages.
