Mechanical Engineers (MEs) spend their time creating, problem solving, analyzing, testing, evaluating, and researching. MEs look at the products, systems, and materials existing in the world and devise ways to make them more efficient, more user-friendly, stronger, faster, and more sustainable – all around BETTER! MEs will invent new products and machines that will surely improve your life. Basically, MEs are in the business of bettering our world. Mechanical Engineers play a significant role in the design and manufacturing of all of the products and systems essential to everyday modern life: things like home appliances, bikes, snowboards, iPods, electric power generation, recreational equipment, hybrid automobiles, keyboards, satellites, wind turbines, wheelchairs, airplanes, robots, industrial equipment, and environmental control systems. They are the designers of the complex mechanical, thermal, and fluid-flow systems, including computer simulation and feedback control. Look, listen, and feel the environment around you and you’ll notice their contributions everywhere.

Mechanical engineering education involves learning how to design safe, reliable, environmentally sound, and cost effective devices and systems. At the core of our curriculum are the engineering science classes where you learn to predict how energy, forces, fluids, and materials will interact in almost any application or natural environment. Mechanical engineering students learn how to program a computer to produce numerical simulations of complicated phenomena, or to control a device to do a specific set of tasks. Teamwork, communication, and computer skills are important to all MEs.

The education of a Mechanical Engineer provides the basic skills needed to be an effective problem solver in the modern world. Thus, while many ME students augment the broad technical knowledge gained in their undergraduate studies with more specific graduate study in ME, some ME graduates combine their ME knowledge with other technical disciplines, or use it as a basis for entry into Business, Law, or Medical School. The Department of Mechanical Engineering provides a broad-based education opportunity for our students that will empower them to make significant contributions to the solution of society’s problems in a wide variety of challenging, interesting, and rewarding careers.

The Mechanical & Materials Engineering (MME) Department at Florida International University (FIU) offers a curriculum which is designed to give our students a thorough understanding of the basic laws of science and to stimulate and develop creative thinking, a professional attitude, economic judgment, and environmental consciousness. The aim is to develop the students’ potential to the fullest, to prepare the students for superior performance as engineers, and to provide the students with the fundamental principles necessary for pursuing advanced study in the diverse fields of engineering, science, and business.

The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) offers BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and MS and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering. Mechanical and materials engineering are, and will be, of critical importance in areas as diverse as space exploration, environmental control, defense, energy issues, transportation and bioengineering.

The Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering is a thriving hub of cutting-edge research and teaching. With 35 Faculty Members and approximately 110 Graduate Students (inclusive of Engineering Sciences Graduate Students who work with MIE Faculty), the Department conducts extensive research, publishes in top-tier high-impact academic journals, competes for major research funding, and boasts national titles.

Upon graduation and over the following years, graduates of the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering will:

Students gain an informative understanding of technical possibilities and sensitivity to societal needs, through the design and construction of machinery. UCF’S Mechanical Engineering program teaches students to analyze and manufacture complex machine systems, including tools and engines. Mechanical Engineering is essential to a wide range of activities that include the design, development, manufacture, management, and control of engineering systems, subsystems, and their components. Typically the manufacturing, power, aerospace, automotive, materials, and processing industries employ mechanical engineers. As a result of the recent rapid expansion of technology, mechanical engineers also have become increasingly involved in computer aided design and visualization; robotics; bioengineering; environmental engineering; solar, wind, and ocean energy sources; and space exploration. The breadth of the field provides graduates with many possibilities for a satisfying career.

Currently, there are more than 30 professors of national and international stature actively engaged in research areas at the leading edge of technology who have degrees from prestigious universities across the country. Faculty are involved in many research areas including MEMS (Microelectrical Mechanical Systems), virtual reality, combustion, environmental science, thermal science, dynamics and control, mechatronics, bioengineering, manufacturing, and processing. The Department’s comprehensive five-year research budget is approximately $13M and is comprised of funding primarily from government agencies and industry via grants, contracts, and gifts. The large number of major archival journals and reference books published and edited by the faculty also enhances the reputation of the Department. The Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering offers comprehensive programs leading to the degrees of B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and related disciplines. UIC is one of 88 Research-I Universities in the United States and is a widely recognized center for international education and research. Frequently, faculty members include students at both the graduate and undergraduate level in research programs and interactions with industry. Students gain first-hand exposure to real-world engineering problems which, along with their classroom and laboratory work, makes them attractive candidates to many employers after graduation.

The Department is housed in a new $32M Engineering Research Facility which combines state-of-the-art research laboratories, including a Class 100 Clean Room, two Virtual Reality CAVE theatres, a comprehensive MEMS research center, advanced CAD/CAM, and computer lab facilities and lecture rooms.

Mechanical engineers use principles of mechanics and energy to develop, design, manufacture, and test tools, machines, motors, new materials, engines, and other devices. They are involved with power-producing machines and develop power-consuming machines. They also work in the fields of medicine and law, management, forensics, the environment, and many others.

A degree in Mechanical Engineering allows majors in mechanical systems or energy systems to prepare for positions in product development, plant design, machine design, basic and applied research, environmental control, materials and manufacturing, robotics, or technical sales. Graduates of this program have the knowledge essential for entry into this dynamic field of engineering or can continue their education through graduate studies. The School of Engineering & Computer Science offers a Masters of Science in Engineering Science with a concentration in Mechanical Engineering. Through our Blended Program a student can begin graduate coursework during his/her senior year at Pacific and complete both a B.S. and M.S. degree in a total of five years!
